Who says getting and staying fit is hard work and boring? Not the “Chain Gang,” a group
of fun-loving, young-at-heart Elim Park residents who delight in teasing the Wellness
Staff by wearing striped convict shirts to fitness class.

The Chain Gang got their start when Wellness Director Barbara Womer, MS, and her assistant Kim Hall began playing songs during class, including Sam Cooke’s classic “Chain
Gang.” Over refreshments in Jazzman’s Café after class, several class members decided
their group needed a name – and the Chain Gang was born.

“We bought convict shirts and started calling Barbara and Kim ‘warden.’ It has all been in
great fun,” chuckled resident Bernie Kapitan.

Members of the Chain Gang take part in Elim Park’s overall Fitness Class, which is held three times a week. The class is specifically designed to improve balance, agility, endurance and muscle tone. Perhaps most importantly, it is fun!

“The class is part of our leading-edge HealthAbility Program,” explained Barbara. “We’ve seen some terrific and measurable results.” Barbara’s observation is supported by the
class participants. “Since I’ve joined the class, my balance has become much better,” said
resident Peggy Eppehimer.

As much as the Chain Gang enjoys staying fit, the camaraderie and friendships they have formed is clearly a valuable ingredient in the mix. “We usually go to Jazzman’s after every class,” explained Louise Miller, a resident of Brooksvale. “We have gotten to know each other pretty well. We have a ball!”

Perhaps the Chain Gang has found the Fountain of Youth – fitness in body, mind, spirit and
warm, supportive friendships.
