Embrace Relaxation and Recreation at Elim Park

April marks Stress Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on the impact of stress and explore ways to manage it effectively. While stress affects everyone, it is especially important for seniors to recognize its effects and find healthy outlets to reduce tension. Whether it is caused by changes in health, lifestyle transitions, or external factors, stress can take a toll on both mental and physical well-being. The good news is that there are countless ways to combat stress, and at Elim Park, we offer a variety of activities and resources to support relaxation and joy.

We recently held a wellness workshop in collaboration with the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce Healthy Community Coalition. The event brought together residents, staff, and members of the broader community to explore how stress impacts our bodies and minds—and what we can do about it. After, the event, Lauren and Kelsey sat down with special guest Deb Borzellino, a licensed marriage and family therapist and owner of Pieces That Fit in Cheshire to record a podcast episode so everyone could benefit from her incredible experiece. This podcast episode focuses on stress awareness and management—a topic that resonates with people of all ages. Listen here!

Understanding Stress and Its Causes Stress is a natural response to life’s demands and challenges. It can stem from everyday situations, such as managing a busy schedule, adapting to new environments, or dealing with health-related concerns. For seniors, additional stressors might include adjusting to retirement, coping with loss, or navigating changes in mobility or independence. While some stress is normal, chronic stress can contribute to issues such as anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and sleep disturbances.

Creative Ways to Manage Stress

  1. Stay Active: Physical activity is a proven stress reliever. At Elim Park, residents can enjoy land and aquatic fitness classes at every ability level, take a dip in our pool or hot tub, or join a friendly game of bocci or shuffleboard.
  2. Engage in Hobbies: Immersing yourself in enjoyable activities can help reduce stress. Our Art Works studio offers art and pottery classes, providing a creative outlet to relax the mind and nurture a sense of accomplishment.
  3. Connect with Others: Social interaction can improve mood and decrease stress. With countless social opportunities and music offerings at Nelson Hall, residents can find companionship and enjoy shared experiences.
  4. Prioritize Relaxation: Taking time to unwind is crucial. Whether it’s enjoying a peaceful walk on campus, listening to soothing music, or indulging in a delicious meal at one of our on-campus restaurants, there are many ways to find peace and pleasure.
  5. Practice Mindfulness and Spiritual Reflection: Simple practices such as deep breathing, meditation, or quiet reflection can help calm the mind and reduce stress. At Elim Park, our on-staff pastor and the serene Sanctuary provide a welcoming space for prayer, study groups, or a moment of stillness.
