A Community Like Family: Father John’s Story

When Father John Williams began thinking about retirement, he knew one thing for certain: living alone was not the future he wanted.

After visiting Elim Park for lunch and touring an apartment, everything seemed to fall into place.

“I talked to them on Tuesday,” he recalls. “By Friday, the paperwork was signed, and I moved in two weeks later.”

It was a quick decision, but one he’s never regretted.

“What I enjoy most about living at Elim Park is, number one, the people.”

Finding Friendship and Community at Elim Park

Father John lives in Mallard Mill, a close-knit neighborhood where friendships are a huge part of everyday life. Before long, he discovered that the neighborhood even has its own running joke. Residents proudly call themselves the “Mallards,” embracing the duck theme with plenty of laughter along the way.

“Mallards are ducks. Ducks quack. Quacks are nuts, and we all live together,” he laughs.

It’s not unusual to hear neighbors greeting one another with a playful “quack” in the hallway. New residents even receive a small duck to wear as a pin, a lighthearted welcome into the community.

“I think it builds morale,” he says.

Friendships That Become Like Family

The friendships don’t stop there. Mornings often begin with the “Breakfast Club,” a group of neighbors who gather to start the day together. Residents host get-togethers, invite one another to events, and make sure no one feels left out.

“It’s high school for seniors,” Father John jokes, “except you have more fun the second time around.”

He is just as grateful for the staff, who help create the warm, family atmosphere he values so much.

“They treat us well,” he says. “The waiters and waitresses could be your grandchildren, and they put up with a lot from us.”

A Retirement Filled With Companionship and Purpose

For Father John, retirement has become far more than simply having a place to live. It has given him companionship, opportunities to continue his ministry, and the freedom to pursue the interests that matter most.

Making the Most of Every Day

“My thought for anybody is to take one day at a time and get the most out of every day that you have,” he says. “Instead of this being the worst time of your life, I think it can be some of the best.”

For him, that’s exactly what retirement has become: not an ending, but a season filled with friendship, purpose, laughter, and a place to truly belong.
